VENUE AND HOSTS

The SBNS Autumn Meeting 24-27 September 2024, will be hosted by our SBNS Colleagues at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. The event will be held at Edgbaston Stadium and Events just outside the city. It is the home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club and the Birmingham Bears, but it also has excellent conference and exhibition facilities.

BSN_logo_-_Belgian_Society_of_Neurosurgery_n.p.o..jpgThe SBNS Meetings Committee will be working closely with the Hosts to make this an informative and enjoyable meeting.  We are also very pleased to announce that the Belgian Society of Neurosurgery will be joining the meeting as our invited guests.  Their President, Bart Deoreitere, will be delivering one of the eponymous lectures on Thursday and several of their members have already agreed to give plenary talks. We are also looking forward to their members submitting abstracts and participating in the programme. It will be a great opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences between our two countries.

BNOS.pngThe British Neuro Oncology Group (BNOS) will also be joining the meeting and hosting a half day meeting on Tuesday 24 September, prior to the start of the main SBNS Meeting. All delegates are welcome to attend. More details and an agenda will be posted on the Sub-Speciality tab in July. Oncology will also be the topic of the Lifelong Learning Session on Wednesday morning, before the start of the main meeting.  It is a great opportunity to find out about new developments and learn about the experiences of experts in this area of neurosurgery.

The main meeting commences on Wednesday afternoon and will include an opening eponymous lecture delivered by Richard Walsh, a senior member of the host unit. The rest of the meeting will be filled with Free Paper sessions on a variety of neurosurgical topics from the abstracts submitted - each session will be headed by a plenary talk from an expert in that field, a Hot Topic Session, Breakfast Seminars, an electronic poster display, and much more!  Please check the Academic Programme tab in the lead up to the meeting for regular updates.  We hope to have the preliminary programme available on this page by the end of July.

The new Neuro Theatre Nurse Network will be joining us.

"The Neuro theatre team here at the QE Birmingham are excited to launch and promote the “Neuro Theatre Network Group” (NTNG). A group designed to connect and support other Neuro centres across the UK, aiming to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, best practice, professional support, staff development: ultimately leading to improving patient care. By working together we can help the NTNG grow and achieve its goal of building a stronger network community for the benefit of Neuro departments, staff and patients."

The NTNG offers the opportunity for all Neuro theatre staff to connect, share and grow professionally. We encourage your active participation and contribute to it success.

Spencer Hampton, Neuro Theatre Lead, UHB.

SOCIAL EVENTS

To complement the academic programme we have some wonderful social events planned.  On the evening of Wednesday 25 September there will be a Welcome Reception at the conference venue, Edgbaston Stadium. This event is a great opportunity to network and catch up with friends and colleagues and hopefully make some new ones!

There is an additional charge of £90 which includes a 3-course meal, drinks and entertainment.  Dress code is Black Tie/National Dress and Honorary Awards.

CODE OF CONDUCT AT SBNS MEETINGS

 SBNS_New_Logo_small.jpg

Three principles of prevention – STOP

1.  STay Professional

  • Don’t use your status to influence/implicitly coerce the vulnerable or more junior
  • Do not use conferences & educational events as opportunities to seek sexual gratification
  • Consider your conduct around/after SBNS events, remembering that you represent our society and its values, for example wearing societal identification in public venues
  • Consider how it may be interpreted if you are photographed/witnessed when you are on study/professional leave
  • Remember, alcohol is the most common date rape drug – be safe; don’t misuse it

2.  Open Your Eyes

  • Are you blind to your own inappropriate actions?
  • Are you ignoring poor behaviour in others?

3.  Protect Each Other

  • “Check in” - If you see inappropriate e.g. creepy/sleazy behaviour, and you feel able to do so, ask the “recipient” if they are OK
  • “Call it out” - If you see inappropriate e.g. creepy/sleazy behaviour, and you feel able to do so, inform the “perpetrator” they are being e.g. creepy/sleazy
  • e.g. if it is a friend of yours or someone you know
